Maybe the teleport crystal was faulty. Maybe your gummi ship dropped you off in a world that wasn't on your itenarary. Maybe you just had too damn much madhu the night before and barely remember your own name, let alone how you came to be wherever it is you are, but the point is, you're here. And it's not where you're supposed to be.
The people running this seaside town take it in stride. There are rumors that they're all deceased and this is a warped sort of afterlife, though aside from the black cloaks, they seem a fairly lively bunch. If they know how to get out of here, they're not telling - and people who try to leave tend to wake up the next day in their own beds with a raging hangover, unless they simply disappear, never to be heard from again.
Some people think it's worth the risk - they have a world to save (or destroy), after all. Others might spend the day in the efficiently Moogle-run research library in hopes of discovering the secret which will allow them to regain their freedom. Still others prefer to settle down (especially after sampling the nightly special at the Cafe that Never Was, which does a bustling business in flavored coffee and sea salt ice cream). You can feel free to join one of the town guilds - White Magic, Black Magic, Warrior, Scholar, and Jack-of-All-Trades (which may or may not be a nicer way of saying thief) - and compete in the various festival events organized by the town mayor, who seems determined to pit everyone against each other for his own entertainment. Whatever you choose to do, your friendly neighborhood moogles make sure you stay connected with your fellow exiles via Mog-Net, which allows for the making of new friendships and the rekindling of old enmities.
Your magic works as it always has, though something seems to be blocking you anytime you attempt to summon. If you check, you find that you bleed the way you always have. The sun rises and sets every day, yet time doesn't seem to pass and the seasons don't follow any set pattern. You may run into friends and comrades who you thought dead, or discover your best friend (or romantic interest) suddenly has no idea who you are.
What you make of your new circumstances is, of course, entirely up to you.
